Ce volume, qui fait partir du monumental traité de chirurgie de Le Dentu et Delbet (1ère éd.), est en grande partie consacrée (pp. 544-987) à la chirurgie crânio-encéphalique et à celle du rachis et de la moelle (la première moitié du volume traite des maladies chirurgicales des nerfs, par Ed. Schwartz, des maladies chirurgicales des artères, par Delbet, des maladies chirurgicales des veines, par Schwartz et des affections du système lymphatiques, par H. Brodier). Antony Chipault (1866-1920), qui exerça à La Salpêtrière, est un des tout premiers pionniers de la neurochirurgie, L'oeuvre de ce chirurgien solitaire est considérable et novatrice. Il avait fait paraître en 1894-95 son monumental traité de Chirurgie opératoire du système nerveux. Ce nouvel ouvrage n'est pas seulement un condensé de ce traité, représentant un nouvel ouvrage, certes plus concis et moins illustré (72 figures dans le texte), mais enrichi des acquisitions importantes faites entre 1894 et 1897 par Chipault et ses contemporains, et basé sur un plus grand nombre d'interventions (et avec davantage de données évolutives, le recul étant bien sûr plus important pour les premières interventions réalisées par Chipault). On trouve notamment exposé la technique opératoire des interventions pour hémoragie intra-crânienne basée sur le procédé de crânio-topographie proportionnelle de Chipault (pp. 671-674), son procédé novateur de ligature des apophyses épineuses (pp. 871-872 et 980), la résection intradurale des racines postérieurs réalisée sept fois par Chipault (pp. 873-875), etc. Les lésions néoplasiques sont traitées pp. 784-813 et 961-967.
