The author demonstrates how, despite a general principle against legislative interference in such matters, the Imperial Parliament, privy council and the law officers of the Crown reserved the power to scrutinize and disallow laws where necessary to protect these fundamental principles. Thus, colonial legislatures were prevented from enacting laws that would have violated the principles of natural justice, common law or the rights of individuals. The author's analysis sheds light on the complex relationship between colonial legislative powers and the protection of individual rights within the British Empire.
