Reimpression…e (tiratura su carta comune, preceduta da varie tirature numerate su carta distinta) di questo romanzo di ambiente militare (protagonista ne è un ufficiale di cavalleria del tutto privo di vocazione verso tale carriera) scritto dal Cahu sotto lo pseudonimo Théo - Chritt e ispirato chiaramente all'esperienza personale dell'autore nell'esercito. L'edizione originale è del 1885. Il Cahu (Beaugency, 1854-1928), diplomato in gioventù alla Scuola di Cavalleria di Saumur, partecipò alla Guerra Franco-Prussiana nel 13° Reggimento Corazzieri, divenendo poi capo di gabinetto del generale Boulanger fino al suo definitivo congedo dalla vita militare, nel 1883. Sindaco di Bec Hellouin, più volte e vanamente candidato al parlamento nazionale, nella seconda parte della sua vita si dedicò totalmente alla scrittura, dando vita a numerosi libri di ogni genere: romanzi umoristici, ricordi di vita militare, libri di protofantascienza (Perdus dans l'espace; Un héritage dans les airs), scritti patriotici e revanchards ispirati al desiderio francese di rivalsa sulla Prussia, volumi per l'infanzia, biograpfie storiche. Fu inoltre giornalista (collaborò a Le Figaro, Gil Blas, La Cocarde, L'Écho de Paris, Le Gaulois), incaricato del governo francese di missioni presso il sultano Abdul Hamid, lo zar Alessandro III e papa Leone XIII e vicepresidente della Société des gens de lettres.
