First printed at the Florence Press in 1918 (limited edition), this edition is printed from those plates by the Florence Press for Chatto & Windus. Paper over boards, linen spine (missing). SIGNED LILLIAN HELLMAN KOBER (neatly printed in ink on a diagonal on the front paste down…). She studied for two years at New York University and then took several courses at Columbia University. And at 21 years of age, on December 31, 1925, Hellman married Arthur Kober, a playwright and press agent, although they often lived apart. In 1930 she went to Hollywood to be a reader for Goldwyn Mayer. While there she met and fell in love with mystery writer Dashiell Hammett. While there she met and fell in love with mystery writer Dashiell Hammett. She divorced Kober and returned to New York City in 1932. When she met Hammett in a Hollywood restaurant, she was 24 and he was 36. They maintained their relationship off and on until his death in January 1961. No doubt some of these poems carried her through.This copy with tender backstrip missing, and boards loose to webbing, front board nearly detached. The text is in excellent condition, unmarked with some pages unopened. Now in archival acetate jacket which holds all in place.

Hard Covers. Condition: NF/NF/NF/NF. Reprint. Four Volume Set, Complete. Reprint of 1904 Set. All four volumes in gray cloth covered boards and spines with shiny gilt lettering on the spines. Light bumping at the tail of the spines of each volume. White endpapers. All four bindings are straight and tight. Small rectangular black… spot on the outside edge of page 392 of Volume II (about 1/4" tall, and enters the book about 1/32") looks much more like something that happened in production than any type of spill. Pages are otherwise clean, white, and crisp. The four volumes are paginated, respectively, at 497, 495, 495, and 550 pages. No dust jackets, possibly as issued - unable to find any with jackets. Not a terribly common set. Orders requesting International or Priority services will ship at actual cost. Very nice set.
