The Complete Tales of Uncle Remus by Joel Chandler Harris is a collection of stories first published in the late 19th century, featuring the beloved character Uncle Remus, a wise and humorous African American storyteller. Spine is faded with small tears in ends. Corners a bit bumped. Ink inscription on front endpaper. Chipped bottom corner on first Contents page with no loss of text. Some stains and thumbing to margins. Thank goodness Fred Church refused to become a businessman like his parents wanted, or we wouldn't have his delightful anthropomorphic rabbits, geese, coons or bears with us today.

Softcover. Condition: Good. Periodical Magazine. Stitched wrappers. Two consecutive issues from November, 1886 and a near-consecutive run of 31 issues from February-October, 1888. All but four in the original turquoise printed outer wrappers with the subscriber's small name and address label on the front wrap. Includes an 1887 index printed on one uncut octavo sheet. Scattered soiling and chipping to the edges of the wraps, some are split along the spine folds, a few issues lack the rear wrap, very good. A nice collection of Harper's weekly children's magazine, celebrated for publishing the work of America's best illustrators and writers of young adult fiction. Included in this set are the first printed appearances of: "The Three Fortunes" and "The Princess on the Glass Hill," written and illustrated by Howard Pyle, "Five Shares in the Fresh-Air Fund" by James Otis, Rosina Emmet Sherwood's illustrations of "Von Nipkin's Defeat" by Boudinot Colt, and W.A. Rogers illustrations (including the front cover) of "Buster Bill" by May Cooper. The set also includes many other illustrations by Rogers, one front cover illustration by Frederick Stuart Church: "Mr. Bear Had Hearkened Too Long to Evil Counsel," and serialized stories by Kirk Munroe, William O. Stoddard, and others. A scarce set seldom found in the original wrappers.

An attractive young woman stands in a look-out built in trees on the east bank of the Hudson River, looking northward towards what appears to be West Point and Constitution Island, which is rather taller than in reality.
