This book is a journey through the annals of clothing and furniture design and usage in France from the very first signs of human habitation to the cusp of the 18th century. The book seeks to provide the reader with an in-depth overview of the many and varied ways that French people from all walks of life have sought to adorn themselves and decorate their living spaces. Through a multifaceted approach that blends historical analysis, sociological commentary, and art history, this book illuminates how clothing and furniture choices reflect not only individual tastes but also broader social, political, and economic forces. Spanning the medieval, Renaissance, and early modern periods, it is a rich and diverse exploration of a topic that is too often neglected: the home and personal style in the development of French identity. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Each volume measures 9.5 x 12 inches. Marbled endpapers. Volume 1 has 16 page preface in French followed by about 150 bright and colorful plates, each with tissue guard. Volume 1 has been cracked open to reveal back side of spine - a clean split in the text block. Second volume is just plates as well. Again, about 150 of them. Bright colors and tissue guards. The gold in the plates has a satisfying metallic sheen. Reproductions of illuminated pages, illustrations from ancient books and other examples of costume of the middle ages. I've listed it at Fair condition because of the break in the text block of volume 1, but in fact, you can't tell it's damaged from the outside, and they are very attractive on the shelf.
