Contact seller5-star sellerArchive of press material compiled by Cinedis, a French press and film agency, concerning the formation and founding members of the Ministere de la Culture (Ministry of Culture) of France. The Ministry of Culture was created by Charles de Gaulle in 1959 and the first Minister was writer Andre Malraux, whose responsibilities incl…uded the democratizing of access to culture (museums, monuments), and elevating postwar France. He created several cultural centers throughout France, actively sponsored the arts (television, film, visual, dance, literary, etc.), but his tastes, although wide-ranging, remained conservative. During the early years of the Ministry, M. Jacques Jaujard was its general secretary, and he was instrumental in coordinating various organizations like Arts and Humanities, National Theaters, Monuments, Cinema, Tourist propaganda, popular Education. Jaujard eventually left eh Ministry in 1967, and Malraux left shortly after upon de Gaulle's final term as President. The Ministry is still in operation to this day, keeping the artistic and culture heritage of France and making the countries museums and cultural centers widely accessible. An engrossing collection regarding a much advertised birth of one of France's finest organizations, the archive consists of thirty single sheets of Cinedis parchment with various stapled French newspaper articles pertaining to Malraux, Jaujard and the Ministry. Nearly all sheets bear annotations in manuscript ink noting the date of the article (1959 throughout, mostly early in the year), and a few loose newspapers and clippings are included. Near Fine overall.

Contact seller5-star sellerArchive of correspondence and film ephemera from representatives at Cinedis and UniFrance Films regarding Christian de la Maziere, briefly the impresario of press relations (and former Waffen-SS soldier) at Cinedis, detailing his participation at the 1959 Cannes Film Festival and at a few Referendum Cinematographique festivals i…n Vichy. Represented in the archive are 27 leaves, several being checklists detailing in manuscript ink and pencil the names of various film stars and their corresponding hotel stays during the 1959 Cannes festival, notably the Carlton Hotel (several leaves of the hotel's stationery), the Martinez, the Montfleury, and the Majestic. On Cinedis parchment, Maziere is stated as the presenter of Renato Castellanis' women's prison exploitation film, .".and the Wild, Wild Women" ('L'Enfer dans la ville"), and on Francinex parchment (Italian language) as presenting the same film in lieu of Georges Cravenne, a head official at Cinedis. Also included are several carbon typescript leaves of correspondence between A. Bailly, general secretary at the Referendum Cinematographique, and de la Maziere, regarding his participation in the 1957 festival and the showing of Jean Boyer's "Senechal the Magnificent," as well as participation in the 1955 and 1959 festivals. An original program for the 1957 festival, and parking passes for the 1959 festival, are also present. Christian de la Maziere (1922-2006) was a journalist and member of the Charlemagne Division of the Waffen SS, and was featured in Marcel Ophuls 1969 documentary "The Sorrow and the Pity," discussing his role in WWII. He also worked for the fascist newspaper "Le Pays Libre" before joining Charlemagne, and in 1974 he wrote "The Captive Dreamer." His involvement at Vichy and the Waffen SS was pardoned before his career in press and film relations, and he apparently garnered some postwar celebrity. Items range in size, the largest being 8.25 x 10.5 inches, the smallest being 5 x 7.5 inches (hotel stationery). Most folded horizontally for postal purposes. Very Good plus overall. Text in French. Represented… in the archive are more than 50 leaves and an advertising catalog, including several checklists detailing the names of various associates who have contributed in some way to Cinedis, and a few notes of correspondence thanking de la Maziere and Martres for gifts received. Dates noted for gift lists include 1957-1958, 1958-1959, and 1959-1960, many with annotations in manuscript ink noting addresses, and some of the lists note in manuscript ink gift ideas for each recipient, being cravate (ties), bloc notes (note pads), montre (watch), crayon Balmain (pencils), echarpe (scarf), and other items. Regarding the budget for these gifts, several leaves detailing item costs are included, on Cinedis parchment, a few being requests from Martres for hard liquor (perhaps for the regular Christmas parties put on by Cinedis for its many patrons and employees). Items range in size, the largest being 8.25 x 10.5 inches, the smallest being 3 x 7 inches (hotel stationery). Housed in gray paper folder, dated 1957-1960 in manuscript ink. Very Good plus overall. Text in French. Included in the archive are two 2-ring binders, noted on the spine of one as "Bulletin Informatio…ns Cinedis," and one with paper label affixed to the spine, "Cinedis Informations Service de Presse." The binders are full of press bulletins detailing film credits and synopses, reviews, and star biographies. Several loose leaves have annotations in manuscript ink, most again detailing the respective film's credits and synopses, and carbon typescripts with corrective annotations, mimeograph synopses on Cinedis parchment, and several examples of film review sections of French newspapers from 1962. Several films are represented, highlights include "Calypso" (1958), "Adorable Sinner" (1959), "European Nights" (1959), "Fate of a man" (1959), "Rue de Paris" (1959), "Third Man on the Mountain" (1959), "The Baron of the Locks" (1960), "Classe Tous Risques" (1960), "A Mistress for the Summer" (1960), "Normandie - Niemen" (1960), and "Quai du Point-du-jour" (1960), as well as director Raymond Rouleau's "The Lovers of Teruel" (1962), highlighted in the newspaper articles. Cinedis was prominent during the heyday of French New Wave, distributing and promoting some of the genre's greatest films, including "Jules and Jim," "Le Trou," "The Gates of Paris," even the popular "Don Camillo" series starring Fernandel.
