"Sobrino de Gregorio Mayans, ingresó en el Departamento de Marina de Cartagena en 1778, y pasó algún tiempo navegando por el Mediterráneo y el Atlántico. Fue comisionado, a las órdenes de Tofiño, de levantar las cartas marítimas de la Península en 1786. Al año siguiente ascendió a teniente de navío, y fue destinado al Observatorio Astronómico. Fue también profesor de navegación hasta septiembre de 1789, cuando recibió la orden de seguir un curso de Química en Segovia con Proust, pero como el curso no tuvo lugar volvió a Cartagena, a preparar la edición de Reflexiones sobre las máquinas y maniobras del uso de a bordo (Madrid, 1791). Además de la obra antes citada, publicó un Tratado de Artillería de Marina (1929), Cartilla de Artillería de Marina (1830) y Reglamento que debe observarse para el arqueo o medida de las capacidades interiores de los buques (1831). Se retiró en 1795, con grado de capitán de navío, pero volvió al servicio activo en 1807 para tomar parte en la Guerra de la Independencia."
