Hardcover. Condition: VG. Dust Jacket Condition: G+. 1st. Freddie Clark has adopted an unusual formula for telling of his experiences in the RAF during WWII, by incorporating the earlier exploits of an relative, Bert Stanley, who served with the RFC/RAF in WWI, first as a mechanic/gunner and later a pilot. Clark's own RAF story begins with his account of training in South Africa and Britain, his early operations and then as a pilot flying Halifax aircraft on top secret operations with 138 Squadron. In mid-1944 his plane was shot down over France on a supply dropping mission. Evasion, capture, a POW camp and eventual return to England followed. The author has insterspersed his narrative with brief accounts of old war-time locations revisited and reunions with the French people who assisted him after the crash and before his POW term. A fascinating story, covering many years of operational flying in two world wars, concluded with an update of RAF training methods in 1993, This copy is ex-library., First edition of 1993, 291 pages including list of service associates lost in the conflict, acknowledgements and selected reading list, followed by 12 pages publisher other books, in-text b/w photos throughout, few documents etc. Black hard covers with silver spine titles VG with wear to lower edges/spine base, library stamp top FFEP with issue sheet below, library stamp first text page, text block ortherwise VG with no other library markings. Add to baskethardcover. Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. Publication: Keston, Independent Books, 1993 Formatting: 8vo, pp. 298. Condition Report: Near Fine. The binding is remarkably tight and squarely set, with sharp corners and unbumped boards that firmly justify this high grade. The black cloth remains notably clean and unfaded, while the silver gilt lettering to the spine is bright and entirely unoxidised. Internally, the text block is superb; the pages are crisp, bright, and completely free of foxing, thumbing, or previous ownership inscriptions, reflecting minimal to no reading wear. The dust jacket is similarly exceptional, remaining unclipped and retaining its vibrant colours without any fading or loss, exhibiting only the most trivial, barely perceptible hints of shelf-wear along the upper extremities. A handsome, highly well-preserved copy. Catalogue Note: First Edition. This volume features a striking dust jacket illustration by aviation artist John Larder, prominently depicting a Halifax bomber illuminated by searchlights. The rear panel of the jacket creatively reproduces a 'MOST SECRET' operational report from 138 Squadron regarding Operation 'Peter-5'. While standard copies are occasionally found on the secondary market, this title remains relatively uncommon in such a crisp, collector-grade state. It represents a highly desirable acquisition for enthusiasts of RAF history and Special Operations Executive (SOE) narratives. Peter Five offers a meticulously researched and engaging account of Freddie Clarkâs extensive RAF career during the Second World War. From his initial training in South Africa to the frustrations and triumphs of flying modified Halifax bombers on top-secret Special Operations Executive (SOE) missions over occupied Europe, Clark delivers a gripping firsthand narrative. Furthermore, the book intertwines his own wartime experiences with the Great War history of his relative, Bert Stanley, an RFC air mechanic and pilot. By contrasting these generational accounts of aerial combat and tracing the evolution of pilot training across seventy-five years, Clark has constructed a comprehensive and compelling treatise on military aviation that serves as both a vital historical record and a vivid memory jogger for those who were there.
