This was published during a several-year time period when the Sierra Club did not stipulate the month of an issue, just the volume, the number, and the year monthly designations for such an i…nfrequent publication having always been somewhat unnecessary in any case. Original printed wrappers, 9 1/4" x 6 1/4", 120 pp. + unpaginated photographic plates and ads, including hachure maps of Yosemite Valley and Kings River Canon (canyon), and a fold-out with bi-scale elevations of the same two locales. also, a plate with an illustration of the 14' tall monument, of galvanized iron with a brass base, installed at the top Mount Shasta in 1875 (destroyed by lightning in 1905). Very Good plus, really quite close to near fine; the major flaw being the common one that circuit binding (yapp binding) was used, in which cover edges were intentionally extended out beyond page edges, but over time the extended part becomes pressed inward somewhat (see scan). Early owner's signature at top of contents page. Otherwise, just occasional very small points of cover wear. A very handsome copy. See scans. Binding sturdy, contents fine. All volumes other than I B uniformly bound in blue cloth-covered boards with gilt lettering to spine. Volume I B h…as black cloth-covered boards with gilt lettering on the spine and, being a later addition to the series, is printed on different, acidic-free, paper. 8vos. All volumes are in near fine condition, being neat, clean, bright and tight throughout. All volumes in their original dust wrappers, very slightly shelf worn and lightly bumped at edges, with a couple of short creases and scuffs here and there. The Oxford History of England was originally planned as a 14 volume series spanning the history of England from Roman times to the outbreak of the first world war. However, since the first edition of the first volume appeared in 1931, the series has been substantially revised and enlarged, with some volumes being replaced by revised editions and a 15th volume taking the story to the end of the second world war added. Some of the volumes are considered the classic work on their period but overall the reputation of the series is mixed. The volumes contained in this complete set are: I A - Roman Britain; I B - The English Settlements; II - Anglo-Saxon England; III - From Domesday to Magna Carta; IV - The Thirteenth Century; V - The Fourteenth Century; VI - The Fifteenth Century; VII - The Earlier Tudors; VIII - The Reign of Elizabeth; IX - The Early Stuarts; X - The Later Stuarts; XI - The Whig Supremacy; XII - The Reign of George III; XIII - The Age of Reform; XIV - England, 1870-1914; XV - English History, 1914-1945; The Consolidated Index. Retains original "Restricted" classification of the Air Technical Service Command. Less wear than most extant copies. A massive rocketry work compiled by remarkable polymath Hsue-shen Tsien (also known as Qian Xuesen): a mathematician, physicist, and inventor of the field of engineering cybernetics. Tsien was a wartime US Army consultant at the time of publication; later he became Goddard Professor of Aerodynamics at Cal Tech. With the onset on McCarthyism his loyalty was questioned by American intelligence agencies and he was confined to house arrest for five years. He left the US for his homeland of China in 1955 on a boat, never to return. Some historians have argued this was greatest single loss the American scientific establishment ever suffered. Warmly welcomed upon arrival by the Chinese communist government, he was instrumental in producing the first Chinese ballistic missile, which also served as foundation for the country's first satellite. He is still revered in China as the father of their space and nuclear programs.
