Soft cover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Soft Cover, side stapled binding, 5 1/2 x 7 7/8 inches. pp 74 plus 2 pages of adverts, one for hand painted studies for rent to copy at "reasonable rates," the second for a catalogue of other Ingall's publications. Originally published in The Ladies' Home Journal. Fully illustrated, includes 18 illustrations along with decorative drop-caps. Sometimes noted as from Melrose, Mass, the Clarkson sisters were prominent in the home, and decorative arts fields as teachers, writers and editors. Although this series was originally published by Ladies Home Journal, much of their magazine work was then made available in pamphlet form though Ingalls publishing of Lynn, Mass. It is worth noting that the address listed in the advert for the hand painted studies for copying rented at reasonable rates is Pleasant Valley, Dutchess County New York which is in the Poughkeepsie area. From a blog concerning the history of the San Diego area: When Mary Josephine Clarkson married Carl Akerman in San Diego a year later the Union noted that the bride had been connected with her sister in editing a department of the Ladies' Home Journal for three years and afterward edited an art magazine for eight more years before becoming interested in metaphysical study and launching her journal. Lida Clarkson was an accomplished artist and author of books on home decoration and art instruction, based on articles she had contributed to Ladies' Home Journal. She also produced a number of color plate gift books featuring chromolithographs of botanical themes and poetry. The blog suggested the pair were just visiting San Diego when their plans changed. Each married around 1900 in the San Diego area at the ages of 48 and 45 respectively and became real estate entrepreneurs of some note.
