I sedici libri De vi et natura animalium offrono un compendio erudito in cui zoologia, tradizione enciclopedica classica e filologia si intrecciano in modo organico. Segue, come opera autonoma ma strettamente connessa, il liber De Gallicis & Latinis nominibus piscium, testo di particolare interesse linguistico e lessicografico, in cui Gyllius mette a confronto la nomenclatura ittiofaunistica latina con quella volgare francese. Il trattato si colloca a pieno titolo nella storia della scienza dei nomi, tra filologia, naturalia e osservazione empirica, e rappresenta uno dei contributi più precoci e consapevoli allo studio comparato dei lessici tecnici.
