Due fenomeni primari di questa cultura, la filosofia e la retorica, in lui mescolano le loro acque. Le passioni della massa e i pensieri dei pochi diventarono l?oggetto della sue riflessioni. Le sfere sono antitetiche…, ma hanno qualcosa in comune, che interessa entrambe: la parola, il ?logos? È la proprietà più caratteristica dell?uomo, ciò che si può chiamare la sua più vera ?espressione? Gorgia studiò i mezzi e le possibilità di questa espressione umana, e può considerarsi, in tale campo, un legislatore. Egli dissocia completamente la parola dalla musica, che in Parmenide, e soprattutto in Empedocle, erano ancora commiste. (?) Dunque il ?logos?, ? che è poi quanto noi chiamiamo ?ragione?, ? inventato dai ?sapienti?, dev?essere loro tolto di mano, perché non riguarda le cose divine, ma è uno strumento ?umano?, che può costruire ogni edificio di pensieri e distruggere ogni edificio di pensieri. Il ?logos? è un terribile strumento di potenza, che incatena e dirige le passioni umane, si applica cioè alla sfera politica. Anche qui Gorgia aveva un modello: Empedocle. Ma in costui la parola era unita alla musica, la politica alla religione; il dominio sulla folla era emotivo e non razionale. Gorgia umanizza la parola, facendola accompagnare soltanto dal ritmo, ed ecco nata la retorica? La producción literaria cristiana ha sido con-siderada casi siempre como fuente de datos para… la historia de la Iglesia antigua o como un aspecto particular de la historia del pensamiento patrístico. Nuestra "Literatura cristiana antigua" pretende, en cambio, considerar la insustituible contribución que el cristianismo ha hecho a la formación de la cultura occidental. Comprendiendo aquí el término «cultura» en sentido amplio, y no exclusivamente en relación con los aspectos artísticos. Por cultura entendemos aquí el pensamiento, los problemas que se planteaba el cristianismo antiguo y las soluciones que encontraba. En este sentido, se recupera, al situarla en su ámbito específico, la peculiaridad del mensaje evangélico, que constituye el núcleo insustituible de toda forma de literatura cristiana. Antiguos y nuevos contemporáneamente son los conte-nidos y los modos de expresión de esta literatura, que constituyó el paso de la civilización antigua a la medieval. CLAUDIO MORESCHINI es profesor de Literatura latina en la Universidad de Pisa. Ha publicado ediciones críticas de diversos Padres en las colecciones "Sources Chrétiennes" y "Corpus Christianorum", así como múltiples ensayos sobre sus obras. Forma parte, también, del comité científico del Centro di Ricerche di Metafisica de la Universidad Católica de Milán. ENRICO NORELLI es profesor de Literatura cristiana apócrifa en la Facultad de Teología de la Universidad de Ginebra. Ha participado también en ediciones del "Corpus Christianorum" y es autor igualmente de numerosos estudios sobre literatura cristiana de los siglos I-II.
