Adolf Karl Ludwig Claus (1838-1900), Chemiker, "studierte zunächst Medizin in Marburg, wandte sich aber sehr bald dem Studium der Chemie zu und promovierte als Schüler Friedrich Wöhlers in G…öttingen. Nach seiner Assistentenzeit wurde er außerordentlicher Professor der Chemie und chemischen Technologie in Freiburg (Breisgau). Seine Experimentalarbeiten gehören meist der organischen Chemie an; so erforschte er systematisch die Chinolinderivate, die Naphtalin-, Anthrazen- und Phenathrenreihe. Claus größte Leistung sind die Arbeiten über die Strukturformel des Benzols (1867); er schuf die Diagonalformel mit dem Begriff der zentralen Bindung der aromatischen Kohlenwasserstoffatome.
