This book examines the history of social revolt in America by focusing on the lives and ideas of a few key figures and groups who attempted to organize society upon new principles. The author traces their efforts back to the 182os, a time of widespread social unrest and uncertainty, and then follows their activities through the antebellum and Civil War periods. The subjects include Owenites, Fourierists, transcendentalists, abolitionists, socialists, anarchists, free -lovers, spiritualists and labor organizers, and the book discusses how their ideas and activities intersected and inuenced each other and the course of American history. The author presents many of their ideas in their own words, taken from the diaries, speeches, pamphlets and letters of the period. In so doing, he shows the diversity of their ideals and activities and highlights their role as the forerunners of the social movements of the twentieth century. This book is an outstanding contribution to the history of American social movements, and provides a fresh and provocative interpretation of American history as a whole. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

First edition. Small archive of correspondence. Norman Thomas was a six-time Socialist candidate for President. Nineteen (19) letters in total, all of which would appear to have been from Felix's own files as several include copies of his responses. Of the nineteen, 13 are from Thomas and 3 are copies of Felix's responses. There is also an angry letter from Travers Clement on "The Call" letterhead with a copy of Felix's response and a brief letter from Harry Fleischman on Socialist Party, U.S.A., letterhead. a birthday program for Thomas's 70th birthday party and what looks to be a keepsake from his 80th. (See pictures for synopsis of correspondence.) Altogether very good.
