Joos van… Cleve, pittore fiammingo attivo ad Anversa dal 1511 al 1540, (anni in cui risulta titolare di una rinomata bottega) è uno degli artisti più rappresentativi di quegli intensi legami culturali ed economici che intercorsero tra Genova e le Fiandre nel periodo rinascimentale. Egli, infatti, fu pittore di grande successo presso il ceto mercantile e nobiliare genovese, per il quale esguì anche alcune pale d'altare d'elevatissima qualità. Di queste, solo una, "L'Adorazione dei Magi" per la chiesa di San Donato, si conserva nella sua collocazione originaria ed è oggi al centro della mostra di Spinola. Il bellissimo "Compianto sul Cristo Morto", commissionato da Nicolò Bellogio, (ritratto nel dipinto insieme alla moglie), era in origine nella chiesa di Santa Maria della Pace, oggi distrutta, ma fu trasferito al Louvre in età napoleonica.Ancor prima, un'altra "Adorazione dei Magi", in origine nella chiesa di San Luca in Albaro, commissionato da Oberto De Lazzari, doge nel 1528, venne requisita nel 1747 dalle truppe austriache e donata al re Augusto III di Polonia, ed è oggi visibile nella Gemäldegalerie di Dresda.Joos van Cleve, Compinto sul Cristo morto, Louvre, Parigi Già agli inizi del '700, però, Joos Van Cleve era stato dimenticato a Genova: la tradizione locale cittadina non aveva tramandato il nome di questo pittore, di cui si possiedono ancor oggi pochi dati certi sulla vita, arrivando ad attribuire le sue opere genovesi, non firmate, ad altri autori, a volte neanche necessariamente fiamminghi. La rivalutazione della sua opera da parte della critica agli inizi del XIX secolo e nuovi studi comparativi con documenti d'archivio a Genova e ad Anversa segnano la riscoperta di quest'autore anche per Genova, restituendoci un tassello determinante della storia degli influssi della pittura fiamminga in città. La mostra presso la Galleria Nazionale della Liguria (all'ultimo piano di Palazzo Spinola di Pellicceria) curata da Farida Simonetti e Gianluca Zanelli, direttore e conservatore del museo, riunisce per la prima volta alcune delle più importanti opere eseguite dal maestro fiammingo per Genova offrendo nuovi spunti di approfondimento sulla sua opera. Il momento centrale dell'esposizione è rappresentato dall"Adorazione dei Magi tra Santo Stefano e Maria Maddalena", opera commissionata al pittore da quel Stefano Raggio di cui Galleria di Palazzo Spinola possiede il piccolo "Ritratto" su tavola, acquistato dallo Stato Italiano dopo il ritrovamento fortuito, nel 1999, sul mercato antiquario parigino. Secondo gli studi più recenti, il "Ritratto", è stato eseguito da Van Cleve ad Anversa e poi usato come modello per ritrarre nuovamente il Raggio nello scomparto di sinistra del trittico dell'Adorazione, da lui commissionato al pittore per la cappella di famiglia "dei tre re", oggi scomparsa, in San Donato, chiesa nella quale si conserva ancor oggi. Il trittico dell'Adorazione dei Magi di Joos Van Cleve, Chiesa di San Donato, Genova L'abbigliamento del Raggio è simile in tutti e due i dipinti, secondo la moda nordica del primo Cinquecento: giubba rossa, camicia plissettata che spunta sul davanti, sopra un mantello di tinta scura con l'immancabile collo di pelliccia e un doppio bordo di velluto nero sulle maniche che cadono squadrate sui gomiti. (giubba, camicia e mantello con collo di pelliccia è anche il ricco abbigliamento del "re mago" inginocchiato davanti a Gesù Bambino). In mostra, è offerta l'opportunità di osservare un terzo tassello di approfondimento sull'opera: il disegno preparatorio della scena centrale, l'Adorazione dei Magi, proveniente dal Rijksmuseum di Amsterdam, uno dei pochissimi.
