Seller: House of Mirth Photos, Easthampton, MA, U.S.A.
An artistically put together photo album by Clinton Reams, who it appears graduated from Iowa State College, was a member of the Marine Corps during World War I, worked in the shipyard in Alexandria, VA - where he was honorably discharged on Jan. 30, 1919, and then went to work on the railroad by the Panama Canal. He spent much time in Virginia, but next to a photo of a little house he's written "Home, Home, Sweet Home. 914 No. 49th St. Omaha [Nebraska]. The album is mostly annotated and includes drawings and creatively torn photos that adorn the pages. It has 39/leaves/75 pages, measures 10.5" x 13.5" and has about 190 photos, including snapshots and real photo postcards, with some additional commercial photos that I did not count. There are also letters and ephemera inside. Photos include shots of the Virginia Ship Building Corp, launching the ships Betsy Bell and the SS Chancook in 1919, the fitting dock, the ship Gunston Hall, WWI welcome home parade in Washington DC, Marine barracks in DC, torpedo assembly plant in Alexandria, VA, General Pershing under the Victory Arch in DC, Battalion of Infantry of the first division, the Virginia Ship corp, Charles city, Iowa, coaling docks in Norfolk, the Panama Canal Zone, Waterfront Mechanical division in Balboa, CZ, Panama City, Port-au-Prince Haiti, New York City, President Woodrow Wilson, a large loose photo of Calvin Coolidge, etc. Loose letters include: 1921 - regarding his application to the southern rr 1921 - letter from president of Panama Belisario Porras 1920 - Harding and Coolidge club An other item of interest include a large folded cyanotype map of Ancon, Balboa, and Panama, including marine routes. He made poetic remarks, such this about Rock Creek Park, Washington, D.C.: "What is rare as a day in June/ Beside such a beautiful stream?/ We unwilling quit its banks too soon,/ For it seemeth like a fairies dream." The album is also full of witticisms. For example, at the V.S.C. shipyard Aug. 9, 1919: "The E.F.C. - S.S. "Chancook" taking to the water like a duck. A lovely album that has one loose photo, otherwise it is in very good condition.
