Also includes several essays on poetry including one on Longfellow's Evageline, and an essay on laughter. John Wrigglesworth 1856-19031 was a cotton dyer's labourer from Greetland near Halifax who published under his own name and under this pseudonym Hubert Cloudsley2. Wrigglesworth was a member of the Calder Valley Poets3. Abigail Clare Sage in her PhD thesis on aspiring writers notes that, "John Wrigglesworth submitted a novel to Macmillan in 1891, but at other points published poetry (on general topics and 'private interests, such as the marriages and deaths of friends') and a book of essays 'on such subjects as the Rights and Wrongs of Women', which he sent to William Gladstone, and which elicited a letter of praise back."4 Which latter is this this volume. Green cloth with gilt titles to front and a gilt flower. Gilt titles to the spine. Bevelled edges to the boards. 1 and 3Malcom Bull's Calderdale companion via J. Horsfall Turner's Halifax Books & Authors. 2 and 4 PhD thesis - Aspiring Writers and the Conditions of Authorship, 1870â" 1914 by Abigail Clare Sage, Cambridge 2020. Green cloth is clean but rather scuffed to the edges and crushed to the spine ends. Small mark to the lower part of the back board and a few fainter marks to the front. Occasional finger mark or scattered spot of foxing to the page margins but the text is generally very clean. Good+, sound copy.
