Hardcover. Condition: Fine. One of 300 (410) copies (this not numbered) handset in Golden Cockerel type and printed on stiff J. Green mould-made paper. Title-page lettering in green by Will Carter. Illustrated with 13 wood engravings by David Jones printed from the blocks. Quarter moss-green cloth with gilt spine lettering, with special patterned paper sides designed by Sebastian Carter. Top edge trimmed, others uncut. Bookplate of Derek Law. A fine copy. This, the eleventh Clover Hill Edition, was a re-issue of the Golden Cockerel Press edition of 1926. Aside from paper and binding it differs insofar as it is printed in the Golden Cockerel face (not cut until 1930) and in achieving a far higher density in the inking of the blocks. This was managed by printing the blocks and text separately. (RLP 79).

10 wood engravings by David Jones printed from the original blocks. No. XVI (16) of 80 special copies with a separate suite of all the engravings printed on japon. Printed on Barcham Green mould made paper by Will Carter at the Rampant Lions Press in Gill's Golden Cockerel type, title page printed in red and black. Sm. folio, original quarter niger with marbled paper covered boards and a niger label on the upper cover lettered in gilt, extra set of engravings loose in the original cloth portfolio, both housed in the original cloth slipcase with printed paper label to spine. An extremely good set Originally the ten engravings were going to include two printed offset, however while the text was being prepared, the missing two blocks were unearthed in Wales so all the engravings were printed from Jones's original blocks. The first printing of the blocks was in the Golden Cockerel Press edition of 1927. In this edition Robert Gibbings who did the printing was very disappointed by the results, blaming the inherent problems caused by Jones's engraving of the blocks. Will Carter at the Rampant Lions Press does a far far better job and in this 1977 publication, the wood engravings are perfectly printed and David Jones's engravings were finally seen in their full glory.

lightly foxed throughout, pp. [8], crown 8vo, original sewn self wrappers, pencil note at head and instance of underlining to introduction, good. Significant, as stated in the cataloguer's introduction, as 'the first specimen of printing from the Clover Hill Press' a fact underlined in pencil and then repeated at head, these in the hand of Sir Ambrose Heal. 'On this press (an Albion of 1849) Douglas Cleverdon will print, from time to time, small limited editions which he hopes will prove agreeable to collectors of modern fine printing' Heal himself being eminent in this latter category. The list itself takes its cue from 'Mr Stanley Morison's researches', which have 'emphasised the importance of these ephemera'.

One of 60 sets of 13 loose engravings, (this no. lviii). Printed on japon by Will Carter at the Rampant Lions Press for Clover Hill Editions. London, published by Douglas Cleverdon. Fine. The Book of Jonah was the first of the three important books illustrated by Jones for the Golden Cockerel Press, first printed in 1926. Cave and Manson praised the "engravings of tremendous power, in which the harmony between the designs and the type was managed with great skill . . . a totally successful conclusion." The printing of the blocks in the 1926 edition left something to be desired, and the present edition, printed by Will Carter from the original blocks, is distinctly superior. .
