Map
No Binding. Condition: New. No Jacket. Here is information about Sheets 39: One Inch Sheet 39 Central Westmorland 1895 - published 2000; intro by Elizabeth Clutton. ISBN.978-1-84151-221-1 This One Inch to the Mile map covers a central area of Westmorland, coverage stretching from the east shore of Lake Windermere eastward to Langdale Fell, and from Kendal northward to Shap Wells. On the reverse is a detailed map of Bowness, including features such as the Hydropathic Hotel, Old England Hotel, Bowness Bay, numerous boathouses and stretching across to Belle Isle and Thompson's Holme. A small portion of Yorkshire is in the SE corner of the one inch map. Elizabeth Clutton refers to the "quieter, gentler fells and valleys of central Westmorland", a contrast with the more dramatic Lake District, and to the "golden age" that Westmorland farming was enjoying at the time of this map. It is not possible to list the many hamlets, farmsteads and other topographical features shown on these maps. However, you may find it useful if we list the towns and principal villages or church parishes that are included on this map. Links are given for those for which detailed large-scale maps are also available. Yorkshire North Riding: Sedbergh. Westmorland: Bowness on Windermere, Fawcett Forest, Howgill, Kendal, Orton, Skelsmergh, Staveley, Tebay, Troutbeck, Underbarrow & Bradleyfield, Windermere.

14.5 cm x 22.5 cm. 207 pages with many illustrations. Original hardcover with dustjacket in protective mylar. Excellent condition with only very minor signs of external wear. Clean inside with solid binding. Crete. The Most fortunate travellers to Crete have their first sight of the island as their ship approaches Iraklion at dawn. As the sky lightens, and if the morning is clear, they will see behind the coastal plain and above the low hills of Knossos some of the mountains, extending east and west throughout the island's length. With so much surviving from the past and so much that is modern, Crete is a marvellous mixture of old and new with regard to its people as well as its lanscape and buildings. To travel through Crete is to travel through history. The authors describe this glorious island in all its aspects: its topography and geology, history in ancient times and under the Venetians, the Turks and then the Greeks, rural and urban life and the amenities that are available to visitors.
