Boston: Little, Brown and Co., 1857. 6th ed. (illustrator). Boston: Little, Brown and Co., 1857. 6th ed. Lincoln Recommended this Treatise and Assigned it to His Apprentices Story, Joseph [1779-1845]. [Bennett, Edmund Hastings, Editor]. Commentaries on Equity Pleadings, And the Incidents Thereof, According to the Practice of the Courts of Equity, Of England and America. Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1857. xxxiii, [1], 871 pp. Octavo (9-1/2" x 6"; 24.1 x 15.2 cm). Contemporary sheep, blind frames to boards, lettering piece, small paper shelf label and blind fillets to spine. Moderate wear to boards and extremities, gatoring to spine, boards beginning to separate, but secure, faint early owner signature in pencil to front pastedown. Moderate toning to interior, some scuffing to pastedowns. A good copy. $650. * Sixth edition. This foundational text in American legal history was first published in 1838 and was established almost immediately as a standard work in the United States and Great Britain. It was one of the five treatises Abraham Lincoln recommended to aspiring lawyers and assigned to his apprentices. The final edition (the thirteenth) was issued in 1886. Roscoe Pound lists it among the treatises "which went far to shape the law" during the nineteenth century. The sixth edition is notable because it reflects the then-recent effects of codification, such as New York's Code of Civil Procedure (Field Code) and other legislative efforts to abolish traditional common law forms of action and merge the systems of law and equity. It is a valuable document of this transitional period. Pound, The Formative Era of American Law 140-141. Cohen, Bibliography of Early American Law 5026.

Boston: Little, Brown, & Co., 1867. 4 vols. (illustrator). Boston: Little, Brown, & Co., 1867. 4 vols. A Well-Preserved Copy of Kent's Commentaries Kent, James [1763-1847]. Comstock, George [1811-1892], Editor. Commentaries on American Law. Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1867. Four volumes. 8 pp. publisher catalogue bound before title page of Volume I. Octavo (9-1/2" x 5-3/4"). Contemporary sheep, blind rules to boards, raised bands, red and black lettering pieces, faint label residue and early owner signature (of C.P. Jones) to spines, blind tooling to board edges. Some minor scratches and spots to boards, light rubbing to extremities, front hinge of Volume II starting. Light toning to interiors, light foxing and faint dampstaining in a few places, offsetting to margins of endleaves, early owner signature (of C.P. Jones) in pencil to front free endpapers of Volumes II and III. A well-preserved set. $950. * Eleventh edition. Kent's Commentaries is probably the single most important interpretation of American law. Writing in 1847, Marvin ranked it above Blackstone and observed that it contains "not only a clear statement of the English law, with all the alterations that have taken place since the time of Blackstone, but a full account of the main principles of Equity, also, a review of the modifications engrafted on the English law by the different states of the Union." Marvin's latter observation points to the significance of this landmark work. Published at a time when there was significant opposition to English law, Kent's Commentaries established it in a manner that appealed to the majority of influential American jurists and legislators. Marvin, Legal Bibliography 438. Catalogue of the Library of the Harvard Law School (1909) I:1088.
