Hardcover. Condition: Fair. 4th Edition. Fair copy in marbled calf. Contents are clean but for a very light dampstain on fore-edge of first 20 or so pages. Spine has a crack running vertically as well as on the hinges. Boards are still holding, but just. Dust-staining to edges of page block. Some chipping to grey paper of title page (pamphlet cover) near gutter.

If there was corner leather it was rubbed away along with the spine ends. Rubbing on edges with hand-written spine title barely legible. Heavy foxing, old dampstains, and dog-earring of endpapers and text pages. Name of Joseph Worrel, dated 1837, on first free endpaper. First edition was published in 1796, with this edition by a publisher in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania scarce. William Cobbett was a British pamphleteer who emigrated to America in the 1790s and criticized its version of democracy. He had spent time in France in 1792 and here relates the atrocities of the French Revolution as a warning to the Americans on nationalist sovereignty. For legal reasons he moved back to England in 1800 where he continued publishing controversial political arguments, resulting in imprisonment for libel. ; 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall; 116 pp.

Pigskin leather spine and wall-paper over boards. Paper skinned at front board with about 1/3 of paper covering lost. Boards scuffed at edges; corners bumped and bruised. Unlettered leather spine is solid. Replacement endpages at front and rear, rather too generously glued to adjoining leaf - at front, the title page. Front endpage split showing replacement crash under leather and resewn binding. Some several signatures starting and rubbed at protruding edges. Damp line to the corners and front edge of the first 30 or so and last 20 pages. Expected moderate toning and foxing scattered in text. Contains one only of the four plates called for. Otherwise complete in the text, including the terminal leaf with plate descriptions. *4 [2 daggers] [2] A-2B4. Crude reapirs could be reversed without much trouble. Fair to good only.

Cobbett attacks Edmund Randolph, who had resigned as George Washington's Secretary of State after an accusation (unproven) that he had accepted a bribe from France to oppose a 1795 treaty between the United States and Great Britain. In fair condition, with rubbing and leather to boards and spine, primarily along edges and corners. Cracking to hinges at front and back. Text block remains bound with minor wear. Contemporary pencil marginalia to front of book. Staining to some edges and corners. General age-related toning to pages, along with periodic foxing and wear. Please see photographs and ask any questions prior to purchasing. An extremely scarce Lancaster County, Pennsylvania imprint of a piece by William Cobbett (1763-1835). Known most of his influence in abolishing the "rotten boroughs" in Britain, Cobbett was also briefly a resident of the United States and was opposed to its democratic values, which he attacked in pamphlets like these. A wonderful piece for preservation and restoration.

William Cobbett fled England in the 1790s, and settled in Philadelphia where he became engaged in American politics as a printer and pamphleteer. He later returned to England, gained a seat in Parliament, and was influential in the passage of the Reform Act of 1832.
