Quelques mois après, les Juifs se voient déclarés "étrangers" et, en décembre 1935, ceux d'entre eux qui sont… psychanalystes doivent démissionner de la Société psychanalytique allemande. Fondée par Karl Abraham trente ans auparavant, celle-ci disparait en 1938. La psychanalyse, "science juive", est rayée du territoire du Reich. Mais pas le "traitement de l'âme", la "psychothérapie", que les autorités ne considèrent pas d'un mauvais oeil. Le Dr Mathias Göring, neveu du puissant maréchal, regroupe, dès l'avènement de Hitler, médecins et psychologues "aryens" en une société puis un institut qui assimilent quelques lambeaux freudiens dans l'amalgame normatif que réclame la Weltanschauung nazie. La "psychothérapie" va donc proliférer durant les années brunes pour remettre soldats et citoyens dans le droit chemin et consolider, au grand dam des médecins organicistes, l'importance de l'étiologie et des traitements psychiques. C'est cette histoire, faite ici comme ailleurs de compromissions, d'arrivisme, d'horreur et parfois d'héroïsme que reconstruit minutieusement le livre de Geoffrey Cocks. Histoire à méditer d'une reconnaissance officielle de la psychothérapie. Mais non de la psychanalyse, il faut le répéter, pour que ne soit pas versée au crédit du médiocre Institut Göring quelque survivance de la découverte de Freud en terre nazie, à l'époque d'Auschwitz.
