The literature of Brazil written in Portuguese and so rich as to require a volume almost as large as the present for its adequate exposition, is therefore not included. The reader, aware at the outset that he has before him an extremely provincial type of literature, will not expect great masterpieces. On the other hand, he will learn what effect has been produced on the transplanted Spaniard by living on the great plains of Argentina. He will better comprehend the difference between the sober energetic Chilean and the fun-loving Peruvian or the passionate Venezuelan. He will understand why there have been so many revolutions in Mexico. The anecdotes of poets' lives and the tragic stories of men who have lived and died for an ideal will inspire him with greater respect for a country which like Cuba struggled a whole century for its freedom.
