Encuadernación de tapa dura. Condition: Bien. 1Ş Edición. 4to, 2 volumes bound in one. I: VII + (1) + 196pp. II: 192pp + ( 1 + 1 blank). Printer's device on title pages, woodcut head and tailpieces; folding map of South America by Veremondo Rossi. Previous owner stamp on title page. Some restored marginal wormholes. Bound in original full vellum, with gilt lettered title on spine. Born from a family of ancient nobility, he began his education in the College of Nobles of Ravenna, founded by Cardinal Francesco Barberini and supported by the learned Jesuit Camillo Berardi. He then continued his studies at the University of Padua where he graduated in law and, subsequently, in theology, entering the Society of Jesus on July 22, 1753. The following year, I made contact with Jesuit missionaries from Latin America, went to Bologna to be well-educated and embarked in Genoa, in 1755, sometimes in the Americas, reaching Cartagena and, finally, Quito. He remained in South America for over a decade, teaching moral theology at the University of Quito and, above all, working on the grandiose editorial project of writing a historical-geographical compendium of South America. In 1767, following the expulsion of the Jesuits from all the territories of the Kingdom of Spain, ordered by Charles III, Coleti was forced to interrupt his work and move to Italy, to teach theology in the Convent of San Girolamo in Bagnacavallo and devote himself to cataloging and use of the huge amount of documents brought by Quito. In 1771 he finished his most important and famous work, the historical-geographical Dictionary of South America, which was published in Venice, immediately becoming a highly requested text translated into various languages. In his hometown Coletti moved definitively in 1773, following the suppression of the Society of Jesus, decreed by Clement XIV. He continued his scientific and informative work until his death, making himself the author of extensive published literature and manuscripts, now preserved in the Marciana Library.
