Born in 1795, he lived a long life dedicated to spiritual leadership. Ordained in 1818, he served as the beloved pastor of several parishes before accepting a role as professor at the Nicolet College. Labelle helped to found Collà ge L'Assomption, a venture that would eventually count as one of his proudest achievements, and in 1830 became the parish priest of L'Assomption. His efforts to establish a convent there were successful, and he remained in the parish until 1845 when, at the request of the Bishop of Kingston, he became their administrator. In 1855, failing health forced him to resign his pastorate, and he lived out his final days in Repentigny, where he passed away on March 1, 1865. The author presents a nuanced and moving portrait of a complex and devout man whose life was an example of selfless service to his community and to God.
