First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good-. First Edition. This spelling book was used throughout the State of Indiana for two or three decades. It contains 206 lessons, which are word lists with pronounciation guides--correct pronounciation was deemed to be the foundation of good spelling. The preface indicates that this series was prepared to remedy the problems in teaching spelling after a uniform book series was previously abandoned. One page has examples of sign language. This appears to be the first edition as no other dates are present and the copyright and title pages dates are the same (1891). The covers are original with a red cloth spine over tan decorated paper-covered boards. The covers are in generally nice condition and are clean and bright with some wear, especially to the edges. The contents have some light pencil notations, probably written by a teacher (the front and rear paste-downs and end papers have a few notes, student list, etc. Both the front and rear inner hinges are starting, but the book is tight. Please inquire if you would like more information. ; Indiana State Series; 16mo 6" - 7" tall; 128 pages.
