He was introduced to the Lake District at an early age, accompanying his father on sketching tours. After a brilliant academic career at Oxford, where he was a pupil of John Ruskin, he married and settled at Gillhead, Windermere. He was influenced by John Ruskin, and William Morris, from who he derived a life-long interest in Norse settlement, art and language. This book, 'The Lake Counties', was first published in 1902, and in a revised edition in 1932 the year of his death Hugh Walpole said it is 'the grandest prose writing about the Lake District in existence'. The text is perfectly complemented by the sixteen colour reproductions of watercolours and seventy two line illustrations by the artist A. Reginald Smith. Ref XX2. A.Reginald Smith (illustrator).…
