Quarta edizione, pubblicata a vent'anni dall'originale e poco dopo la scomparsa dell'autore, del primo libro di Ghidini, dedicato alla caccia «più aderente alla sua consuetudine venatoria», quella vagante alla minuta selvaggina. Il libro si apre con un ricordo di Franco Ceroni Giacometti che ripercorre la cospicua e fortunata bibliografia di Ghidini, uno dei più fecondi autori della letteratura venatoria italiana; la prima parte dell'opera è dedicata alla caccia vagante col fucile e tratta della scelta e cura dell'arma, delle munizioni, accessori e richiami, della caccia alle allodole con lo specchietto, la civetta, il falco, alla borrita, della caccia ai pivieri e pavoncelle, delle caccie semivaganti; la seconda parte tratta della cattura degli uccelli col vischio (già vietata in forma vagante dal codice venatorio ma il testo fu mantenuto in quanto «unico trattatello moderno sull'argomento») con la civetta o i richiami; la terza parte è costituita da un elenco degli specie di volatili oggetto di caccia, con nomi latini e dialettali, e la quarta contiene le appendici sulla conservazione della selvaggina e sulla situazione normativa. Ceresoli, p. 274: «Quest'opera (.) è a tutt'oggi l'unica che tratti specificamente della caccia agli uccelletti col vischio e col fucile: è una delle opere classiche moderne sull'uccellagione». This text was first published in Bergamo in 1587 in 4to, and gave rise to 'a fierce dispute over how to read Horace's Ars poetica'. Cologno was a native of Bergamo, and was professor of philosophy at Padua (where Harvey matriculated in early 1600). He died in 1602.
