Condition: new. ALL UK PARCELS SENT TRACKED! ALL OVERSEAS PARCELS SENT AIRMAIL, TRACKED! (S/hand, Hardcover, 1969). (1662) 1969 new edition. 12mo (122 x 202mm). Pplx,x,iv,62. B/w illustrations, bibliography, preface by Isaac Walton. Paper-covered boards. Issued without a dust-wrapper. Minor faults but slight use but very good. Lacks dust-wrapper. "Being a general discourse of angling; imparting many of the aptest wayes and choicest experiments for the taking of most sorts of fish in pond or river". A good manual on all kinds of freshwater fishing. Lots on baits and bait additives! This 1969 edition is reproduced from the edition of 1827. Pp ix-lvi (+9pp of notes) give a biographical sketch by C.G.A.Parker, followed by references and bibliographical notes on former editions. This copy is as originally issued, without a dust-wrapper. One was printed later, by another firm, as an aid to selling through bookshops, but was only added to some of the stock. Colonel Robert Venables was an officer under Cromwell in the Civil War. He achieved notoriety in the Anglo-SpanishWar (1654-1660), when the English army was disastrously defeated in Hispaniola - the two generals in charge were arrested and Venables himself was sent to the Tower of London. They did, however, capture Jamaica which "was a poor island then, and Cromwell must be praised for encouraging its development without any delay. Soon it became the most flourishing colony in the New World". Venables' life and career are considered in detail in the first half of this book, which gives a valuable insight into aspects of the Civil War, and particularly the West Indian expedition. How many angling books have a preface by Izaac Walton?! "I have read and practised by many books of this kind. yet I could never find in them that height for judgment and reason which you [Venables] have manifested in this." .

This mint unmarked copy is bound in cloth covered boards with bright gilt titling to the spine and the upper board, the text block is tight, white, bright and square. The unclipped dust wrapper is in fine condition and is wrapped in a clear, removable, protective film. Venables was a lieutenant-colonel in the parliamentary army and was wounded at the siege of Chester in 1645. He was appointed governor of Liverpool in 1648 and then served with success in Ireland from 1649 until 1654. Venables was sent as joint commander with Admiral William Penn on the Caribbean expedition against the Spanish in the West Indies in 1654. The English forces were routed at the Siege of Santo Domingo in 1655, but managed to successfully take the Spanish colony of Jamaica for England later in the same year. On his return to England he was sent to the Tower of London for failing to wrest the larger prize of Hispaniola from Spanish control, and cashiered in October the same year. Venables was briefly appointed governor of Chester in 1660. After the Restoration he bought the estate of Wincham, retired from public life, and remained a nonconformist. He published a treatise on fishing, The Experienced Angler, in 1662. Ref Q3.
