Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Penguin New Writing No. 38 with Early Painting by Francis Bacon. Also Contains Work by Wyndham Lewis, Saul Bellow, Edith Sitwell, Denton Welch, 1949 Vintage Paperback. This is "The Penguin New Writing", No. 38, published in 1949. It's a great issue with selections from contemporary…literary lions, and luminaries from the world of Art. Of special interest in this issue is a reproduction of an early painting by Francis Bacon, (reproduced in black-and-white), included in the "Paintings from Recent Exhibitions" section. The painting titled "Head" is a very early effort by Bacon, possibly the first in the series of "Heads", and one sees his distinctive style coalescing in this unsettling picture. It is significant as a marker in Bacon's career. (See picture provided). This inclusion is what elevates the book's value. Other artists whose works are depicted are Edward Burra, Massimo Campigli, Keith Vaughan, Wyndham Lewis, Robert Colquhoun, and Robert McBryde. In the pictorial section there are also photographic stills from stage productions of Shakespeare at Stratford-on-Avon, including plays produced by Anthony Quayle and John Gielgud. there are also costume designs shown by James Bailey and Edward Carrick. This issue is also significant for its inclusions from the literary front : there are selections from Edith Sitwell, Denton Welch and Saul Bellow, as well as many others. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Good Condtion. 105 pages, several illustrations. Original blue cloth, gilt lettered. With dustwrapper. Head & foot of spine a little chipped. Some pages & edges foxed. Dustwrapper protected with a removable clear wrapper. The Batsford books of the 1930s-1950s occupy a sweet spot between reference… work and decorative object. Their appeal now lies as much in the vibrant dustwrappers - modernist in spirit, pastoral in subject - as in the texts themselves. Together the book and wrapper form a coherent, collectible aesthetic: bright, optimistic, and unmistakably of their period, yet still wonderfully contemporary. Size: 15 x 23 cms. Category: Batsford Books; This item may require more postage than the rates shown for delivery outside the UK. If extra postage is required we will contact you before processing your order and you will be given the details and option to decline the extra cost. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The interest in primates, from lemurs to gorillas, has never been greater. Primatologists are continually finding evidence in the behavior and ecology of our closest genetic relatives that sheds light on human origins. So, just who are these 520+ species of complex and intelligent mammals in…habiting the Neotropics, Africa, Madagascar, and Asia? The Natural History of Primates provides the most current information on wild primates from experts who have studied them in their natural environments. This volume provides up-to-date facts and figures on how groups of social primates interact with each other and the plants and other animal species in their ecosystems: what they eat, which predators might eat them, how males and females seek mates, how infants are raised, and myriad other fascinating details about their visual and vocal communication, their ability to craft and use tools, and the varieties of locomotion they employ. As human populations continue to expand into the rainforests, savannas, and woodlands where nonhuman primates dwell, the preservation of these species becomes ever more important. The Natural History of Primates is unique in its emphasis on the conservation status of primate species and its ample discussions of how humans and nonhuman primates can coexist in the twenty-first century. The first new primatology text available in over a decade-24 chapters combine the latest in-depth findings on ecology, behavior, and conservation from top primatologists Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Hardcover. Condition: New. 1st Edition. Lopen, Somerset: Fulgur Limited, 2018. NEW in Publisher Shrink-wrap. Limited to 300 copies only of each element cover, this NEW copy is Water (Blue). From The Publisher (see image) : In 1977, a series of 78 strange enamel works were exhibited in a small gallery in Cornwall. The vibrant ima…ges were modestly grouped together in five large frames. For the curious viewer the artist provided a page of explanation, affirming that these 'psycho-morphological' studies were, in fact, designs for a Taro. Within a few weeks, the exhibition was gone. Such was the first and last appearance of Ithell Colquhoun's revolutionary explorations of the Taro As Colour. The product of a lifetime of esoteric study and art practice, Colquhoun's bold project seeks to dispense with the figurative narratives of the traditional tarot and re-imagines the forces behind each card as pure colour. Drawing from the pioneering work of Moina Mathers and Florence Farr in the 1890s, Colquhoun integrates the esoteric teachings of the Golden Dawn with Surrealist automatic techniques to produce a design for a taro deck that remains unique in Western esotericism. Setting aside the role of the tarot in fortune-telling, through the power of pure colour Colquhoun invites us to reach for transcendence. Published here as a book for the first time, Taro As Colour draws upon newly commissioned photography to present Colquhoun's magical designs in vivid colour. Printed using the latest techniques of six-colour offset lithography, the original cards are augmented with gold and silver inks and gloss coated to better emulate the original enamels. Colquhoun's original essay is also accompanied by a scholarly introduction by Amy Hale, who explores the background, approach and theory behind this extraordinary body of work. The book is issued with four variations of elemental binding: Air (Yellow), Water (Blue), Fire (Red) and Earth (Indigo). First Edition. Hard Cover. New. Illus. by Seventy-eight Enamel Taro Card Designs, Reproduced/Printed In Six Colours. 4to size - over 10½" tall. Oversized Safely, Securely Packed.
