Paperback. Condition: Good. The Language of Hermeneutics probes the most intense points of proximity between the philosophical hermeneutics of Hans-Georg Gadamer and the poetizing thinking of his great teacher, Martin Heidegger--points of proximity which nevertheless show as clearly as possible the critical points of departure that set these two thinkers on separate parallel thought paths. By focusing exclusively on these two thinkers' respective readings of Plato, Aristotle, Holderlin, and Hegel, this book shows how Gadamer effectively deconstructs his mentor's architectonic of the history of being and retrieves from it a new mode of philosophizing that recognizes and embraces the fundamentally ironic structure of the world and boldly risks an interpretation of it.…

Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: As New. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 152 pages. Published in 2004. Retrospective collection of interviews. One of the most important collections on Hans-Georg Gadamer. The first appearance of the title in English and in the United Kingdom. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents "Hans-Georg Gadamer: A Century of Philosophy" in a felicitous English translation. More illuminating interviews with the great philosopher. "A philosophical and historical testament to the twentieth century, this volume consists of a wide-ranging series of interviews conducted in 1999-2000 between the then-centenarian and his former assistant and associate of over thirty years, Riccardo Dottori. These ten 'dialogues' distill and situate Gadamer's philosophy in the context of what has arguably been the bloodiest century in human history. In the course of the interviews, Gadamer addresses, often critically, the work of a wide variety of philosophers, including Heidegger, Nietzsche, Jaspers, Popper, Vico, Habermas, Rorty, and Derrida. He also elaborates on German philosophy during the Nazi Period and in one of the most fascinating conversations, we are treated to a glimpse of Gadamer's personal perspective on the question of Heidegger's Nazism, including a discussion of the political influence that the great philosopher's wife, Elfriede, had on him, which tends to contradict most other published accounts. Perhaps the most accessible expression of Gadamer's life and work in English today" (Publisher's blurb). A book that illuminates the darkness of our time, radiates with incandescent brilliance, and represents one of the best introductions to the work of possibly the greatest philosopher of the 20th century since Martin Heidegger. Some would go so far as to say that while Heidegger was profoundly original, it was Gadamer, who lived to be 102, who achieved true wisdom. An absolute "must-have" title for Hans Georg Gadamer collectors. This title is a late-modern classic. This is one of few copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing (British) still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare copy thus. One of the greatest philosophers of the 20th century. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER HANS-GEORG GADAMER TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 0826415245. no.…
