Bates lived in Wellesley with her partner Katharine Coman, who illustrated with photographs From Gretna Green To Lands End" and was a history and political economy teacher and founder of the Wellesley College Economics department, where the author was a Professor of English Literature. The pair lived together for twenty-five years until Coman's death in 1915. Katharine Coman (1857 - 1915) was also an author and an American social activist, historian and economist with a special interest in the development of the American West.
