Professor Comas had a distinguished career as an editor and prolific author of scientific papers and books. He had a strong commitment to the "four-field" approach, and this is reflected in the broad range of subjects he wrote about. His publications include influential textbooks on physical anthropology and prehistory, as well as a series of books and articles dealing with the fallacy of racism. He was a vocal critic of the misuse of anthropometric techniques in the reconstruction of racial histories. Professor Comas had a strong interest in the history of our discipline and compiled a history of the American Association of Physical Anthropologists. Juan Comas died in Mexico City.

During his career he worked with the Pan American Union (of the Organization of American States) and with UNESCO. In these positions he played important roles in the development of indigenista-oriented anthropology in Latin America. Retired to Watsonville, California. Died sometime before 2006.
