Edges and corner show bumps and wear as well. Internal binding is good, no hinge issues. Front end page shows previous owners info dated 1855. Also written on front end page in parentheses in pencil) "One of the books we took of Mrs. Carathers at the start of the war". Presumably this is the Civil War. Front pastedown has "ba" written in the corner and second end page contains an 1861 date in the second owner signature - also written in pencil. No other handwriting found. Pages are toned due to age spotting/foxing is present throughout. Some pages have large spots, some are toned, and some barely have any issues. Rear board has possible dampstain and large split to the cloth along the spine edge. Yellow end pages and front and rear, front pastedown and end page has pencil markings and signatures, second end page has an additional two signatures all showing the owner as Henry Robinson (not able to verify if this is the same person as Henry R. Robinson). All essays show the same publisher and copyright on the title pages. Various degrees of foxing is present throughout but binding is securing for the text pages. Front hinge is cracked and rear hinge is starting. There is a 2 1/2 inch piece of the board missing from the front top corner, with additional chipping and pieces of board missing along the entire foredge of the book. Also, there is a piece missing from the top back edge across the entire width about two inches down. Spine has been reinforced with cloth tape which is visible from the inside at the gutter edge. General, overall scratches across the boards. Up to pg. 33, there are pieces of the pages (not effecting the text) missing at the top front corner. Light foxing to the endpages. Marbled edges faded and dust-stained.

Hardcover, good. Scuffed, most notably on high points of embossing, corners bumped with a bit of cardboard exposed there, rubbed along edges, 3 inch tear on rear joint, and approximately 1 inch piece of leather chipped off rear board. Internally, contemporary previous owner's inscription, relatively moderate foxing and tanning throughout, a half dozen or so dogears, otherwise tight, clean, relatively crisp and unmarked. Nice Victorian miscellany, covering science, morality, religion, history, art, literature, and even the Laurel Hill Cemetery of Philadelphia and root beer!
