Membre de la noblesse d'épée provinciale, Sébastien Joseph de Comeau de Charry (1771-1844) a servi comme capitaine d'artillerie dans l'ar…mée de Condé, sous la Révolution. En 1805, après la paix de Campo-Formio, l'invasion imprévue de la Bavière par l'Autriche contraint l'Électeur de Bavière à s'allier à la France. Napoléon, qui a connu de Comeau en garnison autrefois, le désigne, malgré son grade inférieur, pour représenter la Bavière à son grand état-major. Il sera, jusqu'en 1812, l'intermédiaire naturel entre l'Empereur et Maximilien-Joseph, devenu roi de Bavière. C'est à ce titre qu'il assistera notamment à la bataille d'Austerlitz. De la l'importance de ses souvenirs écrits en 1841. S'il est peu sûr quand à l'affaire d'Enghien, ses relation de bataille Austerlitz (ch. XX), 109 (ch. XXIX-XXXVI), la Russie (XXXIX-LXI) sont devenues classiques.
