E. O. Comiers (Claude), savant né à Embrun, Mort à Paris en octobre 1693. Docteur en théologie et protonotaire apostolique, il occupa dans le Dauphiné de hautes fonctions ecclésiastiques. Il s'appliqua également à l'étude des sciences, et ses nombreux écrits attestent ses profondes connaissances en mathématiques, en physique, en chimie et en médecine; il professa même pendant longtemps les mathématiques à Paris. Devenu aveugle en 1690, il alla finir ses jours à l'hospice des Quinze-Vingts. Il fut de 1681 à 1693 l'un des principaux rédacteurs du Mercure et publia dans ce recueil de curieux articles, dont quelques-uns forment la matière de plusieurs volumes : Discours sur les comètes (janvier 1681); Traité des lunettes (juillet 1682, t. XIX à XXXI); l'Homme artificiel anémoscope (mars 1683); Traité des phosphores (juin et juillet 1683); Traité des prophéties, vaticinations, prédictions et prognostications (août 1689), etc. II a aussi collaboré au Journal des savants (années 1676 à 1678) et y a décrit plusieurs machines de son invention. Enfin il a donné à part : la Nouvelle Science de la nature des comètes (Lyon, 1665); la Duplication du cube, la trisection de l'angle, etc. (Paris, 1677, in-4); Traité de la parole, des langues et écritures (Paris, 1690, et Liège, 1691, in-12).
