READING DARWIN, DICKENS AND DISRAELI: THE LIBRARY OF A BATH SOLICITOR. A very nicely produced library list, produced in April 1910 for J.E. Commans of Bath. Alongside standard sets of literature and poetry (Dickens, Scott, Chaucer, Shakespeare) we find a very good selection of technical legal works, and a smattering of science, including Darwin's Descent of Man and Origin of Species. Commans (d. 1920) is recorded as a solicitor, and was an active member of Bath civic life, contributing to the Somersetshire Archaeological and Natural History Society, becoming a director of the Bath Gas Company, and joining the Board of the Bath Royal United Hospital. Very good condition: vellum moderately age-toned; paper very well preserved indeed.
