Cloth. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Seventh Annual Report of the Board of Indian Commissioners, for the Year 1875 (1876) ? An Outstanding Reconstruction-Era Political Association Copy Featuring a Presentation Inscription by Commissioner William Stickney to Treasury Secretary Lot M. Morrill Secure an exceptional piece of American political and indigenous history with this 1876 First Edition report. Published in Washington by the Government Printing Office, this volume serves as a critical primary-source document detailing federal-tribal relations, reservation management, and the execution of Western Indian policy during a pivotal year on the frontier. Collector & Association Highlights: Elite Political Provenance: This copy features a historic presentation inscription on the front free endpaper (f.f.e.p.) from William Stickney, an influential and active member of the Board of Indian Commissioners. Distinguished Recipient: Inscribed directly to Lot M. Morrill (1812-1883), the prominent Governor of Maine, U.S. Senator, and U.S. Secretary of the Treasury under Presidents Grant and Hayes. This direct link between a sitting Commissioner and the Secretary of the Treasury offers unparalleled insight into the high-level political network overseeing Reconstruction-era federal spending and tribal affairs. Vital Historical Record: Comprising 164 pages, this annual report delivers exhaustive data, field correspondence, and administrative overviews tracking the volatile state of tribal affairs just one year prior to the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Condition & Binding Details: Binding: Original publisher's Cloth / Hardcover. State: Very Good. 164 pages. Internally, this is a remarkably tight, clean copy with crisp text. Wear Notes: The authentic period cloth spine is worn and chipped. There is a small, half-inch spot of honest insect damage to the bottom edge of the front free endpaper, which does not affect the presentation inscription or text. Format: 8vo (Octavo) ? over 7" - 9" tall. A premium, investment-grade acquisition for academic institutions or private libraries specializing in Western Americana, 19th-century presidential administrations, or Native American policy history. A deed by the Lords Commissioners of the Treasury dated 18th April 1812 granting the equity of redemption (i.e. the right to reclaim a mortgaged property) in the leasehold estate of John Bourke Ryan to his creditors. Ryan, a serial debtor, had earlier been prosecuted for failing to pay the sum of £288 7s 6d for 'goods sold and delivered' to him by Edward Goldsmid, a merchant of Change Alley in the City of London. As a result of Goldsmid's efforts the Court of Kings Bench declared Ryan an 'outlaw' in civil law, essentially stripping the debtor of his legal protections and permitting the sale of his possessions to cover any costs owed. Following the prosecution, the Commissioner's granted the equity of redemption in Ryan's property to William Speer 'one of the chief clerks of our Treasury' and Henry Charles Litchfield 'solicitor for the affairs of our Treasury' to hold on trust for the benefit of Ryan's creditors, including Goldsmid.
