Jenny James, born 1942 [aged 83 now] founded The Atlantis Commune in London as a "radical primal commune" based on the principles of Reichian, or "Primal Scream", therapy in 1970. In 1974 they moved the established Atlantis Commune to a three-storey house in Burtonport, a village in The Rosses district in the west of County Donegal, in 1974. The name 'Atlantis' came from Burtonport's location on the Atlantic coast and from the legend of Atlantis. At any one time, around thirty people lived in the commune in "Atlantis House", which was brightly decorated, with eyes around the windows and symbols on the walls.Begins on Inner Front prelim [of the dustjacket]: This is a book about men in bed: what they are like, what they could be like and how they can sort out what's wrong with them if they care to. etc. Condition & Description of the book: The original dustjacket houses this amazingly rare book. Priced on front prelim at £7.95 In a great condition. Boards are red cloth with gold/gilt lettering to the spine this is in an amazing condition. Boards are clean and firmly bound to the page block. There are 259 pages and these are all clean and tightly bound. TWO BONUS ITEMS. BONUS ITEM ONE: There is a type-written letter from Jenny James to Spare Rib. N.B. The feminist magazine Spare Rib ran from 1972 to 1993. It set out to re-define what it was to be a woman in 20th century Britain. First page states: Please find a review copy of MALE SEXUALITY : THE ATLANTIS POSITION enclosed : publication date the 22nd August. Copies of any reviews would be appreciated. Second page is the letter A LETTER FROM JENNY JAMES TO SPARE RIB: Dear Spare Rib, You have sent me your magazine and I have read it cover to cover and with the exception of one brave and sensitive article, I feel sickened and depressed. What makes me ill is the way you externalize and disown your own problems as women by blaming them on the other half of humanity. Women coming to consciousness of their situation is exciting if it instils them with the energy and confidence to stand up and take charge of their lives ; but if you encourage them to blame men for all their ills, and to piss away energy on such pathetic pursuits as uncovering obscure female artists in the national Gallery (instead of going off and painting pictures), then the women's liberation movement has no-one but itself to blame for the ridicule to which it is often subject. What moves me to write to you, the straw that breaks my back, is your 'Baby Blues' page. You print, "I battered my baby's head against the wall repeatedly, and it wasn't until we got him to hospital that we realized he was dead", with precious little comment except the weak suggestion of setting up a 'Depressives Anonymous'. [there are a further three chapters to this letter]. N.B. - Jenny James was actually advertising her Primal Scream therapy in Spare Rib 10 years prior to writing this letter to Spare Rib. - BONUS ITEM TWO: A SUMMARY BIOGRAPHY OF JENNY JAMES: Jenny James was born in 1942 in Dartford Kent and lived in the same street as the pop singer Mick Jagger. After the suicide of a friend in the late 1960's, Jenny ended her work in the peace movement and decided to qualify as a psychotherapist. She underwent training therapy with the leading Reichian therapist David Boadella [she wrote up her experience of this in ROOM TO BREATHE, first published in 1974], and subsequently helped to co-founder the anti-psychiatry movement, PEOPLE NOT PSYCHIATRY. There are another 5 paragraphs to this summary which ends with: It is no accident that it is the Male Chauvinist Pig who is the most favoured of the twenty-eight categories of male character types that Jenny employs in her new book: MALE SEXUALITY : THE ATLANTIS POSITION. The summary ends with colourful predictions from Jenny James as to what some reviews of her book may be. - Overall, this collection is unique, interesting with a great historical viewpoint. - END - Rapid Dispatch.

Closed tear extending 1.75 inches into printed area from top margin professionally repaired. 2 margin tears not effecting printed image professionally repaired. Size 23.25 x 34 Inches. This is a c. 1871 Michel Charles Fichot chromolithograph view of Paris burning during the last week of the Paris Commune. Buildings, including the Palais des Tuileries, appear engulfed in flames embellished by striking hand color. A Closer Look The view illustrates Paris from high above the Place de la Concorde, with a burning Palais des Tuileries front and center. The Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel (which still stands) and the Louvre are just behind the Tuileries. The left side of the Louvre is burning. To the left of the Louvre, fires burn along the Rue de Rivoli. To the right of the Louvre, across the Seine, the Palais d'Orsay and the Palais de la Legion d'honneur burn. In the background, the Hotel de Ville is engulfed in flames, while Notre Dame stands untouched. The Préfecture de Police burns in front of Notre Dame, but miraculously, the spire of the Sainte-Chapelle stands. (The Sainte-Chapelle was undamaged). Farther still in the background, fires burn near the Porte St. Martin and in La Villette. Gunboats navigate the Seine. The Paris Commune The Paris Commune governed Paris from March 18, 1871 until May 28, 1871. It was a radical socialist, anti-religious, and revolutionary government that emerged from the chaos of the siege of Paris during the Franco-Prussian War. After controlling Paris for two months, the regular French Army suppressed the uprising in what has become known as La semaine sanglante ('The Bloody Week'). The semaine sanglante lasted from Sunday, May 21 - Sunday, May 28, 1871, and by the end of the week, French government troops had reconquered Paris. 6,667 Parisians were confirmed killed, but unconfirmed estimates place the death toll between 10,000 and 20,000. The Fires of the semaine sanglante Members of the Commune began lighting fires around Paris on Monday night, May 22, starting with French army barracks on the Champ de Mars and the Finance Ministry. The following night, May 23, Commune members lit numerous monuments, including the Palais d'Orsay, the Palais de la Légion d'honneur, and the Palais des Tuileries (which burned until Friday, May 26 and appears front and center in this view). On May 24, the Louvre, the Palais-Royal, the Conciergerie, the Préfecture de Police, and the Théâtre-Lyrique were set ablaze, along with numerous private residences. The greatest destruction that day happened at the Hôtel de Ville (Paris' city hall), which was entirely destroyed along with the city's archives. It started raining on the afternoon of Friday, May 26, and poured the next day, putting out most of the fires. The destruction caused by the fires was widely documented in photographs and lithographs. Chromolithography Chromolithography, sometimes called oleography, is a color lithographic technique developed in the mid-19th century. The process involved using multiple lithographic stones, one for each color, to yield a rich composite effect. Oftentimes, the process would start with a black base coat upon which subsequent colors were layered. Some chromolithographs used 30 or more separate lithographic stones to achieve the desired product. Chromolithograph color could also be effectively blended for even more dramatic results. The process became extremely popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries when it emerged as the dominant method of color printing. The vivid color chromolithography produced made it exceptionally effective for advertising and propaganda imagery. Publication History and Census This view was drawn and lithographed by Michel Charles Fichot, printed by Lemercier, and sold by Martinet c. 1871. We note only two cataloged examples, both of which are.

Good. Newsprint. Exhibits old repairs on verso. Text on verso. Size 17.75 x 12.5 Inches. This is an 1872 André Gill political cartoon map of France after the fall of the Paris Commune. France appears as a gigantic spider's web, with the fly at the center representing the communards , identifiable by the symbolic red Phrygian cap. Four spiders surround the fly, apparently poised for attack. The spider on the top left represents the French government, then the Third Republic, identified by the fleur-de-lis. Proceeding clockwise, the next spider wears the iconic Prussian Pickelhaube , represents Germany and stands astride Alsace and Lorraine, two French provinces that Germany annexed after their victory in the Franco-Prussian War. The spider in the lower right corner represents the exiled French Emperor Napoleon III, who was captured by Prussia during the Franco-Prussian War. The fourth 'spider,' which is, in fact, a pear with spider's legs, represents the Royalists. The pear was the preferred symbol for the 'rotund' Louis-Philippe, the last French king. The Paris Commune The Paris Commune governed Paris from March 18, 1781 until May 28, 1871. It was a radical socialist, anti-religious, and revolutionary government that emerged from the chaos of the siege of Paris during the Franco-Prussian War. After controlling Paris for two months, the regular French Army suppressed the uprising in what has become known as 'The Bloody Week' ( La semaine sanglante ). 6,667 people Parisians were confirmed to have been killed during that week, but unconfirmed estimates place the death toll somewhere between 10,000 and 20,000. 877 regular French army soldiers were killed. Publication History and Census This cartoon was drawn by André Gill and published as the front page of the March 17, 1872 edition of L'Éclipse , one year after the founding of the Commune. An example is part of the P.J. Mode Collection of Persuasive Cartography at Cornell University, and another example is part of the collection at the Musée Carnavalet in Paris.
