First edition. Original 1/4 red leather with matching red cloth. Very good condition, with moderate shelf wear and abrasions. Internally tight and sound with light foxing throughout both volumes. Marginal water stain in parts of the text volume. Text: (iv), 204 pp.; 243 pp., with text engravings throughout. Atlas: Title page and 54 uncolored plates. The plates include both views of bridges and engineering plans. An early European work on North American bridges as many were being built to accommodate the burgeoning rail system through the continent. The first section of the text deals with engineering theory, including systems of Warren, Howe, Fisk, Fink, Bollman, Bowstring, etc. The second section provides detail on specific bridges, with engineering drawings and illustrations, including the Hudson, Hoosic, Weber, Hackensack, Missouri, Delaware, Ohio, Niagara, Genesee, Erie Canal, East River, Lansdowne, Vermillion, and other bridges.
