Compton and published in London by Cassell & Company. Edward Theodore Compton (1849-1921), an English painter settled in Bavaria and a mountaineer himself, was one of the great illustrators of the European high mountains, and a good part of the engraved Alpine views of the late 19th century came from his hand.
