Covers heavily worn, soiled and toned at margins, rubbed and scuffed all round edges with rounded corners rubbed through, affecting text block edges, and crushed ends of a dry and ridged spine. Previous owner's (?) initials on front panel. Previous owner's name crudely obliterated on front free endpaper. Internally pages are a little toned and some spotting on first and last few pages; some minor signs of handling and use throughout. A vintage, deluxe album for 100 cigarette cards, with tipped in colour frontispiece, and descriptive text, elegantly set out, complete with all 100 cards carefully mounted (one has lost two of its corner mounts and hence is a little lose). This is a lovely thing albeit no longer in pretty condition.

An album designed to house, when full, 100 full-color tobacco cards (2.25" x 3.00") issued by two leading tobacco companies "for the benefit of smokers of their products." ALL of the cards are present & flawless, neatly affixed in their proper position adjacent to their names. The text describes all of these flowers, + many more that are found throughout South Africa, highlighting those from the Cape Province. Also addresses some related "biological" topics like nutrition, drought resistance, & plant reproduction. In xi +100 +[2] pages, with text in BOTH English & Afrikaans on facing pages. Foreword by the editor, who was at that time the Director of the National Botanic Gardens, Kirstenbosch, Cape Town. No Date, but OCLC places it c. 1940. Hardcover has pebbled cream-colored cloth over quarter olive cloth-covered boards, lettered in black to front, with a small inset metal plate depicting a flower to center front. Condition is VG+: completely clean inside, with light exterior surface soil. Rubbing to all extremities, down to underlying boards in a very places. Binding strong & straight, pages lightly tanned but completely unmarked save for former owner's name & city to half-title page, Rubbing to extremities with bumping to both ends of spine & corners.
