French explorer and diplomat who was one of the earliest European explorers of the West African interior, and who was aboard the Medusa when it was famously wrecked on its way to Senegal to oust the British. This later expedition to Colombia was carried out under as part of Mollien's duties as Chargé de mission for the French administration, who maintained a healthy interest in Gran Columbia (the state that encompassed much of northern South America and part of southern Central America from 1819 to 1831 including the territories of present-day Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Panama, northern Peru and northwest Brazil) in its relatively new state of Independence from Spain. This short-lived republic; his reports revealed an unimagined variety of geography and cultures to Europe. Sabin 49917.
