    4 décembre 1843-1844. 46 feuillets, pour la plupart in-4, avec adresse. Une lettre déchirée dans la largeur, avec quelques manques (13 février 1844), une autre avec déchirures et manques marginaux assez importants (1er mars 1844), quelques trous provoqués par l'acidité de l'encre dans une troisième (29 mars 1844). Intéressante correspondance adressée à sa femme, retraçant son voyage en Italie effectué en 1843-44 en qualité de médecin personnel de Maria Alexandrovna Saltykova (1807-1845), comtesse Potocka. Maria Alexandrovna Saltykova (1807-1845), fille du prince et diplomate russe Alexandre Nikolaïevitch Saltykov, épousa le comte Boleslaw Potocki (1805-1893) en 1825. Ils vécurent les premières années de leur mariage à Saint-Pétersbourg, puis à l'étranger à partir de 1832 en raison de la santé fragile de la comtesse, tuberculeuse. Elle mourut à Paris peu après la fin de ce voyage en Italie. Sont jointes 6 lettres envoyées à Chapelain par le comte Potocki ou d'autres correspondants de la part de la comtesse Potocka, dont une L. A. S. du comte par laquelle il s'engage à payer 3000 francs d'honoraires sur 6 mois pour accompagner la comtesse et lui donner tous les soins que sa santé exige à compter du 1er octobre 1843, Paris, 7 octobre 1843, 1 page in-4, avec apostille autographe signée de Chapelain, « reçu mille francs à compte, Marseille, le 26 décembre 1843 ». Pierre-Jean Chapelain (1788-1867) fut un médecin magnétiseur réputé. Il participa aux campagnes de Russie et d'Espagne. Reçu médecin le 14 janvier 1817 à Paris, il fut proche du naturaliste Joseph Deleuze (1753-1835), adepte du magnétisme animal, qui le présenta à Balzac. En 1827, Chapelain fonda la revue Le Propagateur du magnétisme animal en association avec Dupotet de Sennevoy, avec qui il ouvrit un cabinet médical pratiquant le magnétisme. Médecin inspecteur des eaux de Luxeuil durant vingt ans, Chapelain se consacra ensuite au développement de l'établissement thermal, pour en faire l'un des plus importants de France. Proche de Charles Fourier, il assista le docteur Simon dans les soins prodigués à son ami avant son décès ainsi que lors de son autopsie.
