Iacobus CONCENATIUS, ein französischer Jurist und Vertreter der humanistischen Jurisprudenz, dessen Lebensdaten nicht gesichert sind: geboren etwa 1520, gestorben gegen Ende des 16. Jahrhunderts, stammte aus Carpentras in der Nähe von Avignon. Er veröffentlichte neben der von ihm betreuten großartigen Edition der opera omnia von Bartolus de Saxoferrato Basel 1562 zwei Schriften: 1. Quaestionum iuris singularium libri quatuor. Lyon 1556: apud Gulielmum Rovillium. 2. Epitomes Oeconomicae artis iuris civilis libri duo. Basel 1562 bei Episcopius. Gesichert ist seine Ankunft in Basel, wo er im Juni 1561 zum ersten Rektoratsessen von Basilius Amerbach eingeladen war. Die Widmungsvorrede zur Edition und Druck der Bartolus-Ausgabe ist datiert: 1. August 1562. Concenatius hielt sich mehr als ein Jahr in Basel auf, betreute die Bartolus-Edition und gab sein Werk Epitomes oeconomicae, eine Zusammenstellung der juristischen loci communes, Vorrede ist datiert mit Mai 1562, heraus. Weitere Hinweise finden sich im Rechnungsbuch der Gemeinschaftsdruckerei von Froben und Bischof (Episcopius). Darin sind das Honorar und die von Froben-Episcopius übernommenen Beherbergungskosten aufgeführt. Concenatius logierte im Gasthaus zum Storchen, auch die Kosten seines Dieners übernahm der Verleger. Erstattet wurden auch die Kosten für die 11 Exemplare anderer Bartolus-Ausgaben, die Concenatius zur Durchführung seiner Bartolus-Edition besorgt hatte. Concenatius war auf der Rückreise nach Frankreich, denn vor Basel hielt er an der Universität Heidelberg 1561 für ein halbes Jahr Vorlesungen in Vertretung des erkrankten, dann am 13. Mai 1561 verstorbenen Rechtslehrer für die Dekretalen Wendelin Heimann. Am 11. Dezember 1560 wurde er als Jacobus Concenatius Carpentoractensis, iur. utr. Doctor immatrikuliert. 1558 hatte Herzog Ottheinrich die Heidelberger Universität zu einer protestantischen Landesuniversität umstrukturiert. Der Rechtsunterricht wurde auf das weltliche Recht, die Legistik, mit drei Lehrstühlen zum Codex, den Pandekten und den Institutionen ausgerichtet. Nur noch einen Annex bildete der Lehrstuhl zu den Dekretalen, den Herzog Ottheinrich auf Rat von Melanchthon aufrecht erhielt. Ob Concenatius wie viele seiner Landsleute aufgrund der religiösen Auseinandersetzungen sich in Deutschland aufhielt wie etwa Donellus, Molinaeus, Hotman oder Gothofredus, ist schwer zu beurteilen. Sein erstes Werk in Lyon 1557 widmete er dem Kardinal von Lothringen, Karl von Guise, dem Führer der katholischen Partei in Frankreich. Concenatius selbst bezeichnete Matthaeus Gribaldus, einem Antitritintarier, als seinen Lehrer und seine Lehrstuhlvertretung war an der protestantischen Universität zu Heidelberg. Bei Philipp Melanchthon sprach am 7. Feburar 1559 ein Doctor Iacobus, vir Gallicus vor, um zwischen dem sächsischen Kurfürsten August und Heinrich II. von Frankreich zu vermitteln. Melanchthon berichtet, er habe diesen Juristen während des Wormser Kolloquiums (August bis November 1557) kennengelernt und ihn als integren Juristen geschätzt. In Worms bei Melanchthon, in Heidelberg Vorlesungen und in Basel Herausgeber, dies ergibt durchaus eine Schlüssigkeit im Leben von Concenatius zwischen den Jahren 1557 und 1562. Danach verliert sich die Spur eines Juristen, der offensichtlich zwischen den feindlichen religiösen Lagern wanderte. Unschätzbar ist die Bartolus-Ausgabe, die mit den hochentwickelten philologischen Kenntnisen und Methoden der humanistischen Jurisprudenz geschaffen wurde und auf der Grundlage von 11 vorangegangenen Editionen erarbeitet worden ist.
