The author opposes "in unpleasant controversy" the admissibility of the plays of the Italian historian and poet Marchese Scipione Francesco Maffei (1675-1755), whose importance lies especially in his contribution to the renewal of Italian theater with the tragedy "Merope. This was praised in detail by Lessing in the "Hamburgische Dramaturgie"; by Goldsmith as "the most finished tragedy of the world".
