Add to basketUndated but c. 1740 . The second (and possibly the first) edtion of this work, of 1720, had 202 pages in the textblock : this copy has 228 pages which corresponds to the later fourth (1740) and later editions. Book size - c. 6.5 x 4 inches, pp. title page (facsimile see below) + xi + 1 (ad - books printed for Samuel Birt ) + 228, hardback in full leather. Book condition - Good : preliminary pages front and back are quite heavily soiled with some foxing but this diminishes quickly into the text block with the remaining pages showing general dustiness with tanning towards the edges and occasional marks, the title page is a facsimile being printed on old paper (c. 100 years old) with a typeface that blends with the rest of the book and with some foxing and soiling that also blends in with the general condition, front and back flyleaves are missing, the pastedowns front and back appear consistent with the age of the book, the inner hinges are exposed but the binding is firm, the page edges are stained/painted brown though this has been rubbed in places especially on the bottom edge, replacement headbands in brown linen ; dark-brown, full leather binding with a blind simple central rectangle with decoration around the perimeter on front and back boards and with a simple four raised bands on the spine : the leather binding has been recently conserved and repaired with replacement leather at three of the corners and a complete new spine piece ; front and back boards are in similar condition with the leather showing cracking and scratches, some deliberate, but the leather remains sound (having been treated), the spine is in keeping with the rest of the binding though obviously a replacement. Please see photos for indications of the condition and contents. A scarce early copy of this book which, whilst showing it has had quite a hard life in its near three hundred years, has been rescued and sympathetically conserved to being a sound copy.
