Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. The Works of Mr. William Congreve Consisting of his Plays and Poems Birmingham. Printed by John Baskerville for J. and R. Tonson, in the Strand, London. MDCCLXI [1761] 3 volumes. All three volumes bound in a recent quarter-leather binding. Light brown leather spine with raised cords, spine labels in maroon and darker brown with gold lettering. Marbled paper over boards. Marbled endpapers. Page edges gilt. Bookplates on the inside front covers of all three volume with the name "Benjamin T. Pierce." The bindings are very handsome -- however, volume 1 and volume 3 were put in the wrong bindings. It doesn't make a bit of difference as the sit on the shelf, as they are numbered 1, II and III - but it's still an embarrassing binder's error. Considering the recent vintage and high quality of the bindings, we're surprised it was allowed to stand. The first volume contains The Old Batchelor and The Double Dealer. 358 pages. 2 engraved plates. The second volume contains Love for Love and The Way of the World. 514 pages. 2 plates. The third volume contains The Mourning Bride, The Judgement of Paris, Semele, and Poems. 514 pages. 1 plates. A very beautiful example of Baskerville's work. Bindings tight and text block clean and square. Books measure 6 x 9.5 inches.
