Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is a thorough study of the maturation process in the eggs of Diemyctilus torosus, an unusual species of salamander. The author, a Belgian scientist, traveled to California to verify the results of previous research and to expand on them. The book opens by providing the scient…ific backstory of the study, emphasizing prior research and the significance of this species for research. It then goes into great detail about the author's own research, including materials used, methods, and the analysis of collected data. This detailed section is likely to be of strong interest to other scientists doing similar work. The book concludes with broader implications of the research findings and their wider application. Researchers and scientists studying salamanders or reproductive processes will likely find this book not only informative, but also a valuable contribution to their field of study. Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book presents a new theory of biological reproduction that does not rely on assumptions regarding germ plasm or other unprovable concepts. The author argues that the process of reproduction is a natural consequence of the aging process in organisms, and that reproductive cells ari…se from parts of the organism that have become isolated from the main body. This theory is supported by experimental evidence from a variety of organisms, including plants and animals. The book also discusses the implications of this theory for our understanding of sexual reproduction, asexual reproduction, and the evolution of life. The author's insights provide a new perspective on the fundamental processes of life and challenge conventional wisdom in biology. Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the concept of ecological succession, focusing on the changes over time that occur in ponds and other water bodies, and how these affect the fish populations that inhabit them. The author examines in detail a series of ecologically distinct ponds, analysing the physi…cal, biological, and chemical characteristics of each, as well as the species of fish found within them. Through this comparative study, the author identifies the key factors responsible for determining which species of fish are present in a given pond, namely the availability of food, the presence of breeding grounds, and competition from other species. This book provides valuable insights into the complex interplay between the environment and the organisms that inhabit it, showcasing how ecological processes shape the distribution and abundance of species over time. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for effective conservation and management of aquatic ecosystems. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book analyzes sea urchin egg fertilization, focusing on cortical responses following sperm penetration. The author's examination of the sea urchin Echinarachnius parma reveals that the membrane protecting its egg forms as a wave that sweeps across the egg's surface after sperm ent…ry, which counters the widely accepted theory that the membrane forms simultaneously across the egg's surface. Moreover, the author observes a gradient of susceptibility to sperm across the egg surface, challenging the view that the fertilization membrane is solely responsible for blocking polyspermy. These discoveries shed new light on cortical changes during fertilization, demonstrating their role in preventing polyspermy and initiating development. The author's research expands our knowledge of fertilization mechanisms and their implications for understanding early developmental processes. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book presents new and intriguing experimental results on initiation of development in the marine invertebrate, Nereis, using heat as an activating agent. Previous work had demonstrated that heat would cause development in some marine species, but this phenomenon is very rarely obs…erved. The author provides experimental evidence that Nereis eggs are highly sensitive to seawater, which makes them difficult to analyze. Even short periods in seawater lead to a loss of ability to initiate development with both warming and sperm. By subjecting the eggs to heat before exposure to seawater, however, the author was able to initiate development in a large proportion of eggs in some experiments. The author also tested the ability of KCl to initiate development in Nereis eggs. While the KCl treatment alone induced some development in a small proportion of eggs, the results were much more pronounced when the KCl treatment was combined with heat treatment. The author concludes that fertilizin, a substance secreted by the egg which induces the sperm to bind to the egg's surface, is essential to initiate development by heat or by KCl. The author's research provides insights that advance our understanding of the mechanisms of fertilization and parthenogenesis and of the sea urchin's role in broader biological questions. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
